?Haroon Hamdard edged toward a suspected explosive device lying in a field in western Afghanistan. His job as a demining worker was to identify such devices and figure out how to render them harmless. But the young worker stumbled. His foot hit a rock that tumbled forward and detonated a small bomb. Mr. Hamdard was left in critical condition, and lost his right arm. He was fitted with a barely functioning prosthetic arm. The married father of one was unemployed for the next six years. Hamdard finally got a job at Spark, a workshop in Kabul funded by a US nonprofit where people who have been disabled by land mines make demining equipment. Sale of the equipment funds rehabilitation clinics, one of which will finally outfit Hamdard with a better prosthetic arm.
After three decades of war, Afghanistan is littered with land mines. Insurgents have been increasingly conflating foreign aid with foreign occupation and demining organizations feel the brunt of this. The majority of nongovernmental workers detained by armed groups in 2011 were deminers ? the Taliban tend not to appreciate those who try to remove their bombs. Many Afghans continue to be injured by land mines, but the level of care Hamdard received is rarely available outside Kabul.

There are always a lot of movies to consider in putting together our Summer Movie Preview Week, particularly with so many star-studded superhero flicks, a “Twilight” heroine-turned-warrior princess, family-friendly fare and reliably raunchy comedies on the horizon. But in thinking about how to properly kick off the week, there is no better opener than shirtless Robert Pattinson in an exclusive clip from his upcoming steamy romance drama “Bel Ami.”
The clip opens in a boudoir with the mostly naked and slightly disheveled Clotilde de Marelle (Christina Ricci) lying in bed, post-tryst, posing a question to her equally scantily clad lover, Georges Duroy (Robert Pattinson). Duroy is a self-made man of sorts, who uses his wits and powers of seduction to rise from poverty to wealth, from a prostitute’s embrace to passionate trysts with wealthy beauties in 19th-century Paris, where politics and media jostle for influence and where sex is power and celebrity an obsession.
“What are you reading?” de Marelle asks Duroy.
“It’s a letter from my father. Every week he puts on his best suit and goes to the priest and the priest writes a letter for him,” Duroy reveals as he gets back into bed. “And every week it’s the same thing: ‘Your mother sends her blessings. [The] pigs have diarrhea, when are you getting married?’ My father’s a peasant, he’s never left his village. And he’s asking me for money.”
“I’d like to see where you grew up,” says de Marelle, who appears to be a young lady of the upper class.
“I’d like to see you there,” Duroy says intimately before locking lips with de Marelle.
“Promise me something,” she requests. “Don’t bring your other women here.”
“I don’t have other women,” he counters.
“All men have other women,” de Marelle says, which Duroy refutes and the lady reacts incredulously.
“Honestly?” she says.
“Honestly and truly,” he answers.
Despite the sweetness and sincerity captured in this particular scene, Pattinson has teased that his character gets himself involved with a variety of female paramours. More importantly, in addition to his being shirtless in a lot of scenes, there’s also a lot of his bare bottom in the film.
“I think there’s a lot of my crack in it,” he laughed when describing the film to MTV news. “I think there’s quite a bit of nudity.”
“Bel Ami” opens in Los Angeles, New York and select cites on June 8. The film will be available on VOD on May 4.

Canonical’s AWSOME API bridges OpenStack and Amazon clouds, Ubuntu has its head in both
New features and services that improve Canonical’s latest version of Ubuntu seem to keep rolling in. The latest addition being the announcement of its AWSOME proxy service. No, that’s not us getting over excited about it, that stands for Any Web Service Over Me, and it includes APIs that smooth the transition to OpenStack for those currently using Amazon’s cloud services. Although not open source, Amazon’s Web Service has such a large market share, that Canonical clearly wants to make integrating with it as smooth as possible. The AWSOME proxy will only provide basic functionality for the AWS side of things, with users still encouraged to adopt the OpenStack infrastructure for deeper capabilities. Still, if you’re currently working with Bezos’ platform, and this was the last barrier to hopping aboard the Precise Pangolin ship, you’re in luck.

Google Wallet updated with improvements and enhancements across the board
Google Wallet has seen another update, and this time Google has made all sorts of improvements and enhancements to the app. Per the change log in the Google Play store:
- Prepaid Card top up forms more flexible
- Citi Mastercard management improvements
- UI improvements
- Privacy enhancements
- Bug fixes
- Updated Terms of Service
The most interesting, on the surface anyway, would be the UI improvements. They must be very subtle, because we're not really seeing any. It's the same fluid and simple UI that has been there for a while, and while we're not complaining, we just don't see any improvements. We're pretty sure that some of this change log is just leftover from the last update. It's OK, Google. We all slip.
We can certainly get on board with improvements, though. Bug fixes are always welcome, as are privacy enhancements. Anything to keep our money safer is a good thing. You'll also be faced with the new terms when you update, and we suggest you read them carefully. There's nothing there you wouldn't expect, but it's always wise to stay informed.
All the ballyhoo aside, we expect the biggest thing behind this update are new privacy enhancements and bug fixes, and we're glad to see them. You'll find your update in the market, or you can hit the link after the break.
